These air fryer cheese scones are light and fluffy inside with a crisp, golden exterior. In under 10 minutes, preparation time included, these warm, flaky breakfast treats are paired perfectly with butter and jam for a delightful morning or afternoon snack.

There is nothing more wonderful than waking up on a Saturday morning and heading into the kitchen to quickly whip up a batch of cheese scones. With the crunch outside and softness within, it’s the ultimate biscuit experience.

One of the best things about this is its convenience: no preheating an oven and no greasy mess from a pan on the stovetop.

WHAT IS CHEESE SCONES?

Quick breads made of flour, baking powder, butter, milk and grated cheese are cheese scones. They are the traditional Scottish delicacy consumed with butter and jam. Scones may be enjoyed with butter or more toppings like bacon, jalapeños or chives, plain.

The air fryer will ensure that the scones have a crispy outer layer while the cheese remains gooey and melty inside.

HOW TO MAKE CHEESE SCONES

  1. Preheat: You can begin scone-making by preheating your air fryer to 375 °F (190 °C) or your oven to 400 °F.
  2. Mix the Dough: Pour 1 cup of flour into a large mixing bowl followed by 2 teaspoons of baking powder, half a teaspoon of choice seasonings, and garlic powder. I used Italian seasoning with Ranch seasoning blend.
  3. Add Cheese: Add 2 cups of grated cheddar cheese, and then mix in half a cup of milk while stirring. Make sure to keep the mixture thick. Combine all ingredients until a soft dough has formed. Be careful not to overwork the dough because it will make the scones dense.
  4. Knead: Gently knead the dough on a surface with flour for 10-15 seconds. Cut out rounds with a biscuit cutter or a glass. Alternatively, shape the dough into patties that are three-quarter inches thick using your hands.
  5. Air Fry: Place the scones in the air-fryer basket or tray, and ensure they are not touching each other. Spray a thin layer of oil on each scone. I use ghee butter spray, so one spray is more than enough for each scone. Fry the scones for three minutes on each side or until both sides are golden brown.
  6. Bake in an Oven: For oven baking, put the scones in no particular order on a prepared, ungreased baking sheet for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are slightly overcooked and light brown in color.

LEFTOVERS

Cheese scones can be kept for about three days in the fridge, in an airtight container. When you’re ready to eat, simply take the scones out of their container and put them on a sheet that is lined with parchment paper.

Put them in the oven at 350°F for 5 to 7 minutes, or until they are warm. If you have an air fryer, warm the scones by putting it in at 350°F for three to five minutes, flipping them halfway.

Take a baking sheet and put the uncooked scones on it for two hours in the deep freezer. After the two hours are over, put the scones in a container that is safe for the freezer. If you want to bake the scones, take them out of the container and let them sit for thirty minutes to defrost.

VARIATIONS

Cheese scones are delicious on their own as well as with toppings. You can put bacon, chives, or ham on top scones as well.

If you want to use cheese other than cheddar you can. For a twist try adding some grated Parmesan cheese.

For a combination of sweet and salty, try putting on top crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar. Mixing chives with Swiss cheese results in a tasty refreshing dish.

The possibilities are endless when it come to what you can put on top of a cheese scone. My personal favorite is bacon and jalapeño.

SERVING

By itself or as a filling, butter and jam is an old favorite, but it works well with savory toppings like bacon or chutney too.

Cheese scones can also be served with soup, stew or salad for a light lunch or dinner. Scones also make wonderful sandwich fillings. You can deep fry the scone! Slices are put in the air fryer, cheeseburgers or deli meat put in the bun and it is smashed together, and it is amazing.

These cheese scones can be customized with various herbs, spices and cheeses, making them versatile and suitable for any occasion. The simplicity of the air fryer ensures a quick hassle-free baking experience.

Pair your cheese scones with a cup of coffee or tea for a warm comforting treat. Adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary can elevate the flavor.

For an extra layer of richness, serve the scones with a dollop of sour cream or a slice of smoked salmon. Their crispy texture complements creamy spreads beautifully.

Enjoy light, fluffy air fryer cheese scones with a crispy golden crust ready in just 10 minutes perfect for breakfast or a savory snack!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

  • ½ cup milk

  • ¼ teaspoon of salt or to taste

  • ½ teaspoon seasoning of choice. I used garlic powder italian seasoning

  • 2 tablespoon minced chives optional

  • 2 TBS Bacon crumbles optional

Directions

  • Set your air fryer temperature at 375°F (190°C) or your oven at 400°F and preheat.
  • In a larger bowl combine 1 cup of flour with 2 teaspoons of baking powder, ½ teaspoon of a seasoning of your choice, and some garlic powder. I used Ranch seasoning blend and Italian seasoning.
  • Mix in 2 cups of grated cheddar cheese, and then slowly stir in ½ cup of milk. The mixture should not be too runny but the soft dough should form easily. Do not overmix, as this might make the scones hard.
  • Lightly flour a flat surface and knead the dough for 10-15 seconds. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass and cut out round shapes, or roll the dough into rounds with a thickness of ¾ inch.
  • Air Fryer Method: If shaping the dough by hand, place the rounds in the air fryer basket or tray without touching them. With a sprayer, put a light coating of oil on each scone. After 3 minutes on each side, the inside of the cheese should be melty and gooey, whilst the outside should be a golden brown. This method keeps the cheese inside the scone in great shape while making the outside crispy.
  • Oven Method: Put the rounds in a ungreased baking tray and set the oven for 12-15 minutes. The scones will turn golden brown after completion.
  • Best served warm with jam and butter or with whatever toppings you prefer. Have fun!

Notes

  • Serving Suggestions
Butter and jam make classic toppings, but savory options like crispy bacon or tangy chutney also pair beautifully with cheese scones.
  • For breakfast, enjoy them with air fryer poached or fried eggs alongside crispy potatoes and sausage.
  • These scones also work well as sandwich buns! Make larger scones, slice them in half and fill them with air fryer cheeseburgers or deli meats for a delicious meal.
  • For a light lunch or dinner, serve cheese scones with hearty soups comforting stews or fresh salads.
