These keto mozzarella sticks are so easy to prepare and tasty that even adults will love them. These gluten-free cheese sticks are also low carb which means that they are perfect for when you need a snack. Plus, they’re even freezable which makes it super convenient.
Jump to Recipe Print RecipeI’ve been focusing on making more kid-friendly keto recipes which is a challenge that my whole family can get behind. Luckily, our experimentation is not limited by any dietary restrictions.
Even my children love crispy cheese sticks, which are breaded but I didn’t want to use the high-carb wheat flour coating. Instead, I focused on trying to find a low-carb substitute and the results were good. It took a few tries, but I finally got it on the third attempt. Of course, after watching my children devour it I knew I was onto something special.
In this post, I will explain how to make the most delicious keto mozzarella sticks. Additionally, I’ll give you some advice on how to prepare them using an air fryer to make it easier and cleaner.
Ingredients
Making keto mozzarella sticks is extremely simple and not a lot is needed. Look at this:
Mozzarella String Cheese: This is the ingredient that matters the most. Extremely fine cheese gets melted, which enables the cheese pull.
Egg: A single egg helps in making sure the breading gets stuck on the cheese sticks.
Almond Flour: Use almond flour, not almond meal for a crunchy texture.
Parmesan Cheese: Premade parmesan gives a coating that is unusually crispy and flavorsome.
Coconut Flour: This pairs well with the oil to give a crust which is doubly crisp.
Spices: I spice it up with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and salt. If you are up for it, you can always add cayenne pepper.

How To Make Keto Mozzarella Sticks
It is better to coat the cheese sticks beforehand, so they can be stored in the freezer, ready to be fried later.
Make sure to heat the oil to check the temperature, the coating stays crisp while the cheese melts too quickly, so put it to 375ºF.
Instead of spending time preparing the cheese sticks, try to find a pre frozen version, it saves you time.
Making mozzarella sticks in the comfort of your home couldn’t be any easier. All that’s left is to pan-fry the cheese sticks in gluten-free bread crumbs until they are golden brown.
1. Dry the Cheese Sticks
First up, beat an egg and dip each cheese stick in it, as this will allow the breading to stick. Now coat the cheese sticks with almond flour, coconut flour, parmesan, and your favorite spices. To increase effectiveness, repeat the coating process for each of the cheese sticks to get an even better outcome.
2. Heat the Mozzarella Sticks
Place oil inside a deep pan and place it on the stove for heating, or use an air fryer as well. On careful placing of the coated cheese sticks in the hot oil, pan fry the cheese sticks until they are golden brown. Alternatively, you can bake them in the oven, but they’ll not be as crispy.
3. Plate and Enjoy
As soon as they are golden brown in color, take them out of the oil and place them on some clean kitchen paper to absorb the excess oil. You are ready to serve them hot and crispy.
How to Serve Keto Mozzarella Sticks
Serving cheese sticks with good keto marinara sauce is my favorite. If you decide to buy ready made marinara sauce, it is important to check that its content does not have any sugar.
These mozzarella sticks would also delight together with the chicken tenders wrapped in bacon, both of which are perfect low-carb snacks. If they are served at a gathering, consider preparing some keto onion rings to serve with them.
Serving Suggestions
You can adjust this recipe in different ways to satisfy your craving. Here are some interesting suggestions:
Utilize pork rind crumbs. Crush pork rinds to make the coating extra crunchy instead of using almond or coconut flour.
Use an air fryer. This technique is less messy and still achieves crunchiness.
Make them spicy. Toss in some cayenne pepper or paprika to the breading to add some spice.
FAQS
1. How do you avoid cheese melting excessively?
The answer is; cheese sticks have to be frozen before frying them. Also, the oil temperature has to be set at 375 degrees. This allows the cheese to be kept inside and not melt away rapidly.
2. How to bake keto mozzarella sticks rather than frying them?
Absolutely! Ensure you bake them for a few minutes on each side at 400°F. Although, note that baking… does not crisp as frying does. If you are after a nice crust try finishing them off under the broiler after lowering the oven temperature.
3. How do you make these ahead of time?
Your first step is to prepare the mozzarella sticks and coat them before freezing them. When it’s time to eat, there’s no need to thaw them; simply fry them straight from the freezer. To heat them, you may also use the oven or an air fryer.
4. What’s the best oil to use?
The best choice of oil here is a keto-friendly avocado oil. Avocado oil is both delicious and packed with healthy fats, so there is no reason for you not to use it.

Ingredients
12 pieces string cheese
2 large eggs beaten
0.5 cup almond flour
0.5 cup Parmesan cheese the powdered kind in a can
2 tablespoon coconut flour
2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt coarse Kosher salt works best
Directions
- Slice the string cheese into two equally smaller pieces.
- Crack an egg into a bowl and mix it thoroughly. Leave it aside for now.
- Place the almond flour, parmesan, coconut flour, Italian spices, garlic powder, and salt in a zipper sandwich bag. Shake the simde bag until the contents are mixed.
- Dip each cheese piece in the whisked egg, then place in the bag and shake it so the bag and coating sticks. Freeze for an hour at the minimum.
- Pour oil in a small frying pan, making sure its half an inch deep. The temperature of the oil should be between 325-375°F. Too hot and the cheese melts too fast. You can use the air fryer instead at temperature of 370-400°F for 5-7 minutes.
- Fry each coated piece of cheese in the hot oil until golden brown. Enjoy!
Notes
- 12 mini cheese sticks can be made with this recipe. The serving size consists of three sticks.
- The content of salt can be increased or decreased per the users desire. Initially, I used a quarter, but then i switched to half a teaspoon for better taste.
- To achieve maximum crispness, coat and freeze the cheese once. After doing so dip it in coating and freeze for an additional 30 minutes. Finally fry the cheese.
