With a grand look and sophisticated taste this mousse recipe is your living canvas to build upon with various, delicious touches. You are guaranteed to have everyone in awe at the event this dessert mousse is served.

What is Chocolate Mousse?

Let’s discuss the particulars. A mousse recipe usually involves two parts, a fluffy and airy component, and a taste base. If you’d rather not indulge yourself in more tedious trying methods, you can use heavy whipping cream and chocolate to make the simplest chocolate mousse.

To make a French styled mousse it is best to incorporate both egg whites and yolks which in turn make the process much harder. But not to worry, you can always reimagine and keep the same method.

The end result is perfect, incredibly tasty, and unbelievably smooth, meaning every person will think you spent hours trying to prepare this dessert when in fact it took almost no time at all. What makes this even better is chocolate mousse is free from glutenous additives.

Is Chocolate Mousse Gluten-Free?

Usually, yes, chocolate mousse is gluten-free. Some recipes use flour as a thickening ingredient though, so it is wise to check. Additionally, some brands of chocolate do contain gluten so make sure the one you buy does not, especially if it is for someone who is gluten sensitive.

Ingredients and notes

  • Heavy Cream – Make sure to keep the heavy whipping cream in a cold area until you are ready to whip it. The cold cream maintains its form better whilst incorporating more air, leading to a fluffy texture. If the cream is too warm, it will not whip properly.
  • Vanilla Extract – It enhances the chocolate taste.
  • Powdered Sugar – This ingredient is optional, but a little sweetness balances out the richness of darker chocolate.
  • Chocolate – It can be either milk, dark, or semi-sweet, provided it is gluten-free.

This recipe is naturally egg free but is not dairy free. For this recipe a few ingredients are needed to achieve a rich satisfying texture.

Steps to Make Chocolate Mousse

It only requires a few simple steps to complete the recipe for easy chocolate mousse.

1. Combine the chocolate with a portion of the cream and vanilla and allow it to melt.

2. Pour warm cream over the melted chocolate and stir until it forms a smooth ganache.

3. Combine the remaining cream with the powdered sugar in another bowl.

4. Make sure to cover the heavy cream and put it in the mixer with powdered sugar and whip at medium speed until it thickens.

5. With a gentle motion, combine the whipped cream and chocolate ganache.

6. Pour the mousse into a glass bowl and place it in the refrigerator to cool until needed.

How to fold in the whipped cream

For the best result in texture, it is important to fold the whipped cream into the chocolate ganache. Here are some easy steps to follow, instead of stirring which may use deflate the air.

1. Pour one-third of the whipped cream on top of the chocolate ganache.

2. Take a spatula and slice the whipped cream in the center and go downwards into the chocolate ganache.

3. Move the spatula around the edge of the bowl and pass through the middle.

4. Then, rotate the bowl slightly and do the same.

5. This technique can be used to fold in the remaining whipped cream.

Tips & Tricks

Here are some additional simple but important tips to keep in mind while preparing this dish:

Never use pre-whipped cream. Instead, beat the fresh cream until whipped and is thick enough to hold soft peaks.

Never exceed the temperature when melting chocolate. The mixture does need to be warm enough, but too much heat may burn it.

Solving Different Texture Problems

Too Sandy Texture?

If your mousse has a grainy texture, it can be due to chocolate not being fully melted into the cream or the cream was over whipped. Before folding in the whipped cream, make sure that the ganache is properly smooth. Remember to only whip the cream to medium peaks.

Mousse Doesn’t Set?

If your mousse is too soft, the heavy cream may not have been whipped enough or the chocolate mixture was overmixed and deflated the mousse. The fix is to simply chill the mousse, then whip another batch of cream and fold it in. This will restore the texture.

How To Serve Your Chocolate Mousse

For best results, spoon the mousse into small ramekins or bowls. Refrigerate it for about one hour before serving. If you want a firmer mousse, let it chill for 4 hours, or even overnight.

Best Toppings For Chocolate Mousse

To take your mousse up a notch, try adding:

  • A dollop of cream
  • Sliced chocolate
  • Bits of toffee
  • Chopped nuts like pistachios or hazelnuts

Make Ahead, Storing & Leftover Chocolate Mousse

Another great feature of chocolate mousse is that it is easy to prepare ahead of time. You can store your mousse in the refrigerator for up to three days.

If you’re looking at longer term preservation, it can be frozen for two months. When ready to use, thaw in refrigerator and gently fold to restore texture as needed.

This simple yet indulgent gluten free chocolate mousse recipe produces a rich airy dessert that requires  minimal effort. Whether you choose to present it plain or dress it up with toppings, it’s sure  to impress!

Notes

  • Monitor Temperatures:
Chocolate: Heat the cream just enough to melt the chocolate without scalding it. Allow the chocolate to cool to room temperature before folding in the whipped cream.
  • Whipped Cream: Keep the cream cold until you are ready to whip it. Whip the cream only after the ganache has cooled to ensure both are at the ideal temperatures.
  • Fixing Soft or Runny Mousse:

To fix it, refrigerate the mousse, then whip another batch of cream to medium peaks and gently fold it in to restore structure.
